Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan recently opened up about his deeply personal and emotional journey of winning over his father, the legendary Amitabh Bachchan, not just as a son, but as an artist. In a candid conversation, Abhishek revealed how the transition of Amitabh Bachchan from being his “toughest critic” to “biggest fan” was not instantaneous—but one that took patience, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to his craft.
For Abhishek, being the son of one of the greatest actors Indian cinema has ever seen came with its own set of challenges. “The expectations were always sky-high. No matter what I did, people were bound to compare it to what my father had achieved. But the toughest pressure, honestly, came from within my home,” he said.
Recounting the early days of his career, Abhishek admitted that Amitabh was never one to sugarcoat his thoughts. “He’s brutally honest. If he didn’t like a performance, he would say so — without a filter. I remember after a couple of my earlier films, he simply said, ‘You need to work harder.’ That hurt, but it was also the push I needed,” said the Guru actor.
He added that his father’s criticism wasn’t born out of harshness but out of belief. “He knew I had it in me and didn’t want me to settle for mediocrity. At the time, it felt disheartening, but in hindsight, I realize that was his way of motivating me.”
It wasn’t until Yuva and Guru that things began to change. Abhishek recalls a moment post-Guru when Amitabh called him late at night and simply said, “You’ve arrived.” That one line, according to Abhishek, was worth more than any award.

“When Guru released, I saw tears in his eyes during the premiere. He didn’t say much, but I could feel the pride. That’s when I knew — he wasn’t just watching me as a father anymore, he was watching me as an audience, as an actor. And he was proud.”
Over the years, the senior Bachchan has openly praised Abhishek’s performances in films like Dostana, Manmarziyaan, Bob Biswas, and Dasvi. In fact, he often takes to social media to share glowing reviews, personal reflections, and warm anecdotes about his son’s work. “There was a time he’d tell me everything I was doing wrong. Now, he notices the things I’m doing right. It means the world to me,” Abhishek said with a smile.
However, the bond between the two actors isn’t just about cinema. It’s rooted in mutual respect, admiration, and love. “He’s not just my father or a co-actor, he’s my hero,” said Abhishek. “To earn his validation as an artist has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my journey.”
Abhishek, who continues to carve a niche for himself with selective, meaningful roles, said that Amitabh Bachchan’s support today feels like “a badge of honour.” He concluded, “He may have been my harshest critic once, but today, he’s my loudest cheerleader. And that, to me, is the biggest reward.”
As the father-son duo continue to inspire generations both on and off screen, their relationship stands as a testament to the evolution of mentorship, legacy, and love in the world of Indian cinema.
